Recipe of the moment: Pilchard & Turmeric Treats.
Pilchard and Turmeric Treats
Turmeric is a hot topic at the moment and with recent research into its health benefits
it has rightly earnt its name of the wonder spice.
It is important to use good quality preferably organic turmeric which has a guaranteed
curcumin content of around 3%. Cheap turmeric has all the essential curcumin taken
out and it is used for capsules so the powder which is left over has little value.
Don`t forget to include freshly ground black pepper which naturally contains a
substance called Piperine this increases the absorption of turmeric and slows down the
excretion so allowing more time for turmeric to work its magic !
Do not feed turmeric capsules to dogs, they have around 95% curcumin which is fine
for us but far too strong for animals
1 Cup of wholegrain flour or use Gram flour if you want gluten free
1 Cup of Oatmeal (leave out and double up on flour for gluten free)
If you have turmeric paste already made then add 7 tablespoons or alternatively three
quarters cup of turmeric powder with quarter cup of warm coconut oil
1 grated small courgette or a few Kale leaves finely chopped
1 tin of Sardines or Pilchards in tomato sauce – drain most of sauce away
Free range eggs x 2
1 tablespoon ground flax seeds
5 grinds of freshly ground black pepper
Put all ingredients into a bowl and mix until you get a thick cake mix
Line a small baking tray with baking paper and spoon in mixture and level, sprinkle a
few caraway or fennel seeds on top if you have them
Place in the centre of a pre heated oven 180oc for around 20/25 minutes, it should be
moist and springy. Cut to the required size whilst warm. As this is a moist treat it will
have to be stored in the fridge or freeze batches and just take out what is needed. This
recipe is good for senior dogs as it is soft and the addition of oily fish is particularly
good for them.
